A quick guide on how to mark up and read the most common proofreader’s marks.
Proofreading marks are the widely recognised symbols and notations used for unambiguous correction of typeset pages. They consist of textual marks placed in the appropriate position within the text, and corresponding margin marks placed in the margin alongside. Multiple margin marks on the same line are separated by slashes. Some of the most common and useful proofreading marks are shown below.
